Costco Aims to Expand Footprint in France in 2015
Costco may be making its way to a new market in Europe by 2015. The retail giant is planning to open its first store in France in a Paris suburb, a company executive said during a commercial real estate conference.
Gary Swindells, the head of Costco France, claims that the warehouse club aims to open 15 stores in France within a decade, with up to 6 in the Paris region. The company plans to open in the town of Villebon-sur-Yvette southwest of the French capital in the spring of 2015, according to Yahoo News.
Costco previously announced that it will expand in France in September 2011, yet its first project was denied authorization. Nevertheless, now that a new application has been filed for 2015, the company appears to have big ambitions for France. The company also saw other major cities as areas of interest, such as Bordeaux, Marseille, Toulouse, Lyon, and Nice, according to Le Figaro.
“We want to have four to six outlets around the capital,” said Swindells. “We have not changed our business plan. We see 5 to 6 stores in five years, then 10 to 15 in ten years, and around 25 in twenty years.”
