Walmart Invests in Distribution Center and Opens New Fulfillment Center; Ken Caviness, Karisa Sprague, and Geoffrey Appleby Comment
CULLMAN, AL & MCCORDSVILLE, IN - Walmart is making big moves fit for a big-box retailer such as itself. Two recent announcements hit the newswires that detail some of Walmart’s latest expansion efforts. In Cullman, Alabama, the retailer is investing $350 million in high-tech innovations at its regional distribution center. Walmart also announced the opening of a new fulfillment center near Indianapolis, Indiana.
“Walmart’s Cullman distribution center has been a pillar in our community for the last 40 years,” said Ken Caviness, General Manager of the Cullman distribution center. “Adding robotics, automation, and AI-powered software systems to this facility will revolutionize an already impressive operation, fundamentally changing the way we distribute products to stores. This isn’t just an investment in our facility, but also in our associates, our community, and our future.”
Specifically, Walmart’s $350 million investment in Cullman will be in high-tech robotics and automation technologies, according to Made in Alabama. This will improve productivity by doubling Walmart’s shipments from the hub.
Yesterday, Walmart also celebrated the grand opening of a new 2.2-million-square-foot fulfillment center in McCordsville, IN. This is Walmart’s largest fulfillment center to date and will enable the retailer to fulfill more orders, more quickly, a press release explained.
“The McCordsville grand opening marks a major milestone in our supply chain modernization journey,” said Karisa Sprague, Senior Vice President, Fulfillment Network Operations. “With more customers shopping online, we’re leveraging state-of-the-art technology to increase speed of delivery all while creating tech-empowered career opportunities for our associates.”
Geoffrey Appleby, General Manager of the McCordsville fulfillment center, also commented.
“I’m pleased that nearly half of the associates in our McCordsville fulfillment center are continuing their career with us here after having worked in our Plainfield facility,” said Appleby. “And I’m excited to welcome new team members from the area. Together, we’ll focus on the community and our customers.”
