Gill's Advanced Energy Recovery System
On July 17th, Gills Onions hosted a commemoration at their Oxnard facility for the new onion juice-fueled Advanced Energy Recovery System. Guests were treated to an all-access tour of the ultra-efficient system, which uses 100% of the daily onion waste to run two fuel cell generators. The onion waste is turned to liquid, then put through an anaerobic digester, converting the juice to methane. The methane is then burned cleanly to power 600 kilowatt fuel cells, supplying the Oxnard facility with enough clean electricity to run 460 homes. On hand at the event was CDFA Secretary A.G. Kawamura, California EPA Secretary Linda Adams, Gills Onions co-owners David and Steven Gill and Hal Snyder of the Southern California Gas Company.
