The California Avocado Commission is gearing up for its California Avo Babies promotion, which takes place in May and June. As part of the campaign, parents can participate in a contest by uploading photos of their babies eating California avocados onto CAC’s contest page. Winners receive a $5,000 cash scholarship grand prize or one of two $2,500 cash scholarship prizes. Pediatricians and authors Drs. Bill and Jim Sears will serve as spokesmen to promote avocados for babies. Dr. Bill Sears stated quote, “The avocado's smooth, creamy consistency makes it a great first fresh fruit for babies to enjoy.”

Good news for Purity Organic Produce, as the company expects 100% growth of this year’s Argentine organic Pear Program. The company attributes the success to an increased demand for the organic category, continued investment in superior shipping technology and optimal growing conditions. President Ricardo Sardans stated, “We’re really happy to have started the 2011 season on such a high note.” The company is also extending their use of Modified Atmosphere Packaging bags with this year’s program.

The USDA has issued a final rule on PACA trust protection. PACA imposes a statutory trust on certain assets of persons that have not paid for perishable agricultural commodities. Under the new rule, a supplier who has met the eligibility requirement can accept partial payment, or agree to enter into a scheduled payment agreement of the past due amount while maintaining trust eligibility. In fiscal year 2010, USDA resolved nearly 2,000 claims, involving $30 million dollars filed under PACA.
