CALIFORNIA - Ominous storm clouds one day and bright shining skies the next.

Officially, it’s not even summer yet, and already the San Joaquin Valley will be seeing temperatures hitting triple digits today and, as current forecasts suggest, later this weekend as well. The state’s capital is slated to hit 103 degrees today, the first triple digit temperatures of the year, according to the Sacramento Bee. The weekend prior, however, the National Weather Service (NWS) issued multiple severe thunderstorm warnings throughout the Sierra and foothills, with reports of hail and heavy downpours. What’s with this weather in California?

All things considered, triple digit temperatures aren’t that unusual this time of year, as Tom Dang, Meteorologist at the NWS Sacramento office, tells the Bee.

“We normally hit 100 degrees about this time of year,” said Dang. “Last year, we hit 100 degrees on June 8 as well. There is potential for some showers and/or thunderstorms not unlike what we saw a few nights ago. It’s one of those hit-or-miss type things. At the very least, the moisture should help to cool things down a bit.”

Tuesday will see slightly cooler temperatures, and moving into Wednesday there is a 30 percent chance of precipitation in the Sierra for the afternoon.

Local news broadcaster KCRA reports that highs will reach about 96 degrees in the Valley.
