Gills Onions is planning to install a patented Vanadium Redox Battery from Prudent Energy. Gills Onions President Steve Gill stated that “Energy storage has become an essential part of integrating renewable energy into the electricity grid…and Prudent Energy’s system does this very well.” The new system will help improve the efficiency of Gills Onions’ current Advanced Energy Recovery System, which converts onion waste into a source of clean energy.
United Fresh is currently accepting nominations for the 2011 Produce Excellence in Foodservice Awards Program. Established in 2008 and sponsored by Pro*Act, the chefs will be honored in several categories, including restaurants, hotels, healthcare, colleges and K through 12 school foodservice. West Mathison, president of Stemilt Growers, will serve as board president in 2011 for the Washington State Horticultural Association. In this leadership position, Mathison will represent shippers and growers by helping to advance the tree fruit industry and advocate legislation. Mathison said quote “Agriculture – and especially tree fruit – is a huge economic driver for Washington state. We must work together as an industry to form strong positions on issues that could impact our ability to remain competitive in the marketplace.”
