Mann Packing is responding to its company's volume growth by expanding its main processing facility in Salinas, California. The new venture will increase the facility in size by 18,000 square feet. The expansion is projected to reach completion by the kick off of the spring season in Salinas. Vice President of Marketing Lorri Koster, comments on the continued growth, "Using the latest green technology in construction, this is the fifth expansion to the facility in as many years."
Yakima, WA
First Fruits Marketing has launched its Opal Apple brand campaign and will be contributing to Katie’s Krops. The non-profit encourages youth to volunteer their time and assist the underserved in their communities by giving them the tools to grow produce in local gardens. Kids have the opportunity to receive grants when they submit essays in markets where Opal apples are sold. Andy Tudor, director of marketing for First Fruits Marketing, states, "We are proud to partner with Katie’s Krops. This non-profit embodies the spirit of our mission at First Fruits Marketing." He continues, “Not only does it encourage young people to volunteer, it exposes them to fresh produce at a young age while providing for those in need.”
California
The California valley citrus growers are reflecting back on the damage left by the season's record breaking frost. Growers together, spent approximately $100 million on frost protection for the 2011- 2012 crop. California Citrus Mutual estimates that 20% of the mandarin crop and 10% of the navel crop will be lost to crop damage. In regards to the high alert for locating freeze damage during inspections, CCM President Joel Nelsen states, "We’re mindful of our industry’s positive reputation and the need to not blemish that reputation with freeze damaged fruit. We’re confident that inspections will be successful at eliminating any damaged fruit and that only the highest quality fruit will reach the consumer."
