Mission Produce is increasing the scope and size of its Mexican packing facility to accommodate a 20% increase in demand for avocados in the US. President Steve Barnard stated: “The Mexico packing plant has all of the newest fruit handling technology making it one of the most modern avocado facilities in the world. The improvements have more than tripled the packing production rate where we can now easily move 1 million pounds of fruit a day”. This major grower-exporter has made technological strides in the areas of packing, pre-cooling, receiving, cold storage and bagging, which is sure to help Mission Produce meet the growing US demand for avocados.
Sun World harvests and markets a diverse assortment of citrus fruits throughout the year. While most shippers focus on peak season varieties, Sun World focuses on early and late varieties that can be released during a “marketing window that would indicate some sort of advantage”, as stated by commodity manager Rick Paul. Sun World also has significant tangerine, minneola, grapefruit, and lemon programs which have all attracted interest this season despite high industry volumes. Mr. Paul stated that “We have an exceptional production team and a strong base of growers who help us meet customer demand for high quality California.”
Colorful Harvest has announced the completion of a new cooler facility in Mexico. Doug Ranno, COO and managing partner of Colorful Harvest stated that “Our new state of the art cooling capability will provide enhanced quality control to match our state of the art growing operations in Mexico. It is an important step in the expansion of our year round berry program.” The 35,000 square foot facility in central Mexico is equipped with the most modern forced air cooling tunnels and is expected to begin receiving fruit beginning this month.
