PLYMOUTH, ME – Spuds nearly scattered across the Interstate, when a potato truck veered into the median and was upended, delaying traffic last Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning.

The Truck, traveling southbound on Interstate 95, late at night on February 7th, when the crash occurred. Local CBS affiliate WABI 5 reported that poor road conditions were to blame.

As we reported early last week, Maine, along with the rest of the Northeast, has been hit by a serious storm front—with frigid air from Canada being dragged downward across the state, resulting in snowy and icy roads.

Traffic was backed up to one lane while Maine Department of Transportation workers and inmates from the nearby Penobscot County Jail removed potatoes from the truck. Department of Environmental Protection agents were also on hand to remove fuel from the tractor trailer.

The truck’s driver was taken to the hospital where he was treated for minor injuries.

Potato sacks were gathered from the wreckage, but no news was forthcoming on the tousled taters’ state or their prospects of being rescued.
