NORMAN PARK, GA - Spring harvest is under way for Southern Valley, which is celebrating 30 years as a family farming operation, marking a key milestone as it looks back on growing from its original 100 acres of cabbage in 1987.

Jon Schwalls, Director of Operations, Southern Valley Produce“With the growth and expansion that has taken place over the last 30 years, it is nice for some things to stay the same once in a while,” said Director of Operations, Jon Schwalls. “This Spring we’re focusing in on fine tuning the growing entity of the operation that got us started in the produce industry to begin with.”

While cabbage is often the first spring crop the company harvests, it noted in a press release that warmer weather prompted it to plant products a little earlier than usual.

Amongst Southern Valley’s signature items are:

  • Pole-Grown Cucumbers
  • Yellow squash
  • Zucchini
  • Eggplant
  • Bell pepper
  • Variety pepper
  • Mini sweet pepper
  • Hard squash
  • Sweet corn

“I think this is the earliest I can ever remember us picking yellow squash,” Jon added, with zucchini set to come off the plant within the next week. Cucumbers will follow shortly after around May 10th.

Dug Schwalls, Director of Business Development, Southern Valley Produce“The energy around the fields, offices, and packing houses is high. Everyone is ready to kick off the season and chomping at the bits a little. We’re geared up to see what this spring is going to hold,” said Director of Business Development, Dug Schwalls.

Dug continued, “We’ve really been focused on internal growth over the last couple of years–just trying to catch up with our external growth and expansion. We’ve got several new team members that we’re excited to have with us and know that having them on board is only going to improve what we already do so well.”

As the company continues to eye larger moves and opportunities, AndNowUKnow will report on it and other movers in the fresh produce industry.
