Cherry harvesting is off to a slow start this year, due to the cold weather conditions. We talked to Stemilt Marketing Director, Roger Pepperl, who mentioned harvest in California is running about a week late. He expects picking to start May 5th, with promotional volumes available in mid-May. He stated quote, “we expect to have a really nice crop out of California, with really nice sizes, peaking at 10 ½ row.” In California, about 10 million boxes of cherries are anticipated this year. Of that figure, Stemilt produces about 1.2 million boxes.
It’s the end of celery production in South Florida for Duda Farm Fresh Foods. The season began in mid-December and growers were faced with cold conditions throughout. Director of Fresh Cut Sales, Bill Munger stated, “There were a few weather challenges, but overall quality has been good, harvest has been consistent and it’s been a good year for celery.” Florida production will now transition to sweet corn, which is expected to last through Summer.
