Tanimura & Antle is unveiling its new Rootless Hydroponic Butter Lettuce.  The lettuce is available in compact, 1-count clamshells or 3-count club-packs and are packaged to deliver 35% more product per pallet.  The new design has been created specifically for the rootless head of lettuce.  Additionally, a recent study by the company revealed that roots vs. no roots does not affect the shelf life of lettuce. Rick Antle, CEO, states, "We wanted to increase our line of greenhouse grown lettuces and offer a value option to our retail customer."

First Lady Michelle Obama and Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, are welcoming new school nutrition standards to US elementary school meals.  Then announcement was held at the Parklawn Elementary School in Alexandria, Virginia.  The new standards will align the National School Breakfast and Lunch Programs with the 2010 Dietary Guidelines, doubling the amount of fruits and vegetables served.  Dr. Lorelei DiSogra, United’s vice president of nutrition and health, who also attended in the event, states, “Increasing children’s consumption of fruits and vegetables will improve their health and reduce their risk of childhood obesity. We support this landmark effort by First Lady Michelle Obama and USDA to create healthier school meals and healthier school food environments for millions of America’s children.”

The California Tomato Cooperative is bidding farewell to Ed Beckman.  The 24-year veteran, has lead the cooperative since its establishment in 2007.  Mr.  Beckman is leaving to take another position within the industry.  Dean Janssen of Ace Tomato Company and Chairman of the CTF Board of Directors, states, "We want to thank Ed for all of his service.  CTF is now recognized as a leader in food safety and has continued to evolve and improve its programs throughout Ed’s tenure and the CTF members want to acknowledge all of his hard work and achievements.”
