Mission Produce’s Robb Bertels Talks Avocado Growth and Distribution

ORLANDO, FL – Consumers are ramping up for spring, and with it comes a newly refreshed craving for avocados. From salads, to stir frys, baked creations, and more, Mission Produce is gearing up for another successful year of avocado-fueled sales.

Distribution and a consistent supply are a leading focus for the company, as Vice President of Marketing Robb Bertels recently told me. So, just what keeps the company’s product in steady supply?

Robb Bertels, Vice President of Marketing, Mission Produce

“We currently are sourcing from multiple places, we’ll have fruit from California, Mexico, Peru, Chile, New Zealand, as well as other sources,” Robb tells me from the bustling Southern Exposure show floor.

Mission Produce usually supplies its distribution partners with avocados for all occasions in a 25 pound lug case. However, the company also offers a variety of packs, including the following, to suit any need:

  • RPCs
  • Double layer RPCs
  • Flats and 4 kilos
  • Euro-boxes

Robb says that for the best product, Mission Produce bags at the source and at the packing plant, and then will supplement by rebagging and repacking throughout its distribution centers.

“We try to distribute as much ripened fruit as we can,” Robb says.

Where in the U.S. has the company set its eight distribution centers, and where is the company looking to lay new ground across the globe?
