SAN PEDRO, CA - In a recent State of the Port address, Port Executive Director Gene Seroka outlined the priorities of the Port of Los Angeles for 2022. The address highlighted ongoing supply chain issues, as well as the $17 billion earmarked for ports nationwide in the recently passed Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.

$2.2 billion has been allocated by California Governor Gavin Newsom in his California state budget for 2022.

Gene Seroka, Executive Director, Port of Los Angeles“This level of funding represents a monumental opportunity for ports,” said Seroka. “Beyond freight system improvements, it will fund much-needed digital and cybersecurity infrastructure. It supports our creation of a future-ready goods movement workforce, and it aligns with our mission to lead the nation in the development of zero-emissions port drayage.”

According to a release, Seroka defined key Port initiatives on tap for 2022. These include:

  • Supply Chain Efficiency
  • Workforce Development and Job Creation
  • Cybersecurity
  • Environment

Seroka also broke down the 2021 calendar year, noting that the Port of Los Angeles processed about 10.7 million Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) during 2021, breaking its previous calendar year record by 13 percent.

“Decades of development provided the berth space, backland, and rail infrastructure to process more cargo than ever before,” Seroka said. “In 2021, our marine terminal operators and workforce gave us the ability to move that cargo—from the ships to railcars or out the gates on trucks—and for that we are forever grateful to them.”

We’ll continue to keep our eyes open for the latest news regarding the supply chain, so stay tuned.
