TORONTO, CANADA - Pineapples are one product that just about everyone can agree on, right? No one that I know in my network of family, friends, and colleagues dislikes pineapples. That shouldn’t surprise anyone or make anyone believe that I only associate with a freak group of pineapple lovers. Pineapples are just that good.

But it’s more than just their sweet taste and digestive properties, there is something regal about the majestic pineapple. Maybe it’s the crown, maybe it’s the exotic look, whatever it is, pineapples are special. Particularly around the holidays.

It is because of the ‘special’ nature that compels anyone who has anything to do with pineapples, be they a grower, importer, wholesaler, retail buyer, or merchant, to put an awful lot of holiday planning into them. Produce Moneyball’s foray into pineapple data then comes at the perfect time. If you happen to be one of those people who is apt to put in an awful lot of pineapple planning in the waning days of the calendar year, then read on, there might be a tidbit or two that tweak your interest.

With holidays coming up, now is the time to look to pineapples as the category sees a demand-driven market

The accompanying graph shows 2020 volume remaining steady throughout November beginning in week 45 and continuing into most of December up to week 51. Interestingly, throughout most of this time period, costs gradually declined beginning at over $8 and declining by mid-December in week 50 to approximately $6.50.

You can call this ‘the calm before the storm.’ Costs began to move up for the Christmas buy week, spiking in week 52 during the New Year’s buy week. What’s also interesting is that volume also spiked during the same week suggesting a demand driven market. Produce Moneyball predicts a similar situation for 2021, although the ‘calm before the storm’ is not as pronounced and the ‘Christmas Goose’ begins a little earlier. The ‘Christmas Goose’ is what we call the time just before the holidays when prices mysteriously increase.

Keep checking with Produce Moneyball, it may give you the insights you need when planning your Holiday fruit tray and when to expect the ‘Christmas Goose.'
