GLENMONT, NY - New York City may be called the Big Apple, but head north and you’ll find acres of stunning apple orchards ready to snag that title away from the City That Never Sleeps. New York Apple Sales (NYAS) has emerged from the heart of summer into a period of near perfect weather. With substantial moisture, abundant sunshine, and warm temperatures coming in from the Eastern Hudson Valley, the Canadian border to the north, and Niagara Falls to the west, this year’s New York apple crop is shaping up to be a masterpiece.

Kaari Stannard, President and Owner, New York Apple Sales“As marketers, NYAS is ready and excited about our new crop, and as a grower and packing partner, I am thrilled at the level of quality we are seeing so far,” President Kaari Stannard remarked.

This season’s favorable weather came as a welcome surprise to the area’s apple growers, as at this time one year ago, a six-week drought hit the state, adversely affecting the full crop in a substantial way. In late spring, concerns were shared about a possible weaker than normal return bud and bloom, and pollination was also expected to be less than vibrant. The set this year was good, but the ideal growing conditions have transformed this year’s crop into something extraordinary, and retailers are taking notice.

“We have received positive interest from retailers so far, and they are anxious to get into the new crop,” Michael Harwood, Sales Team member, said in a press release.

Dan Ingersoll, Apple Buyer, and Chelsea Van Acker, Field Services, are two apple experts who, after daily orchard inspections, concluded that this year’s crop is certainly a turnaround from 2018.

The first picking of Wildfire Gala for New York Apple Sales, in the Hudson Valley, stands out with a blazing red color, though other early apples are looking excellent as well. New York Apple Sales growers and packers across the state are ready and eager for this year’s crop—some have already started to harvest, and within a few weeks, full harvest will begin in earnest.

Matt Wells, Director of Field Services, New York Apple Sales“As usual, our traditional fall cool nights and sunny October days will finish this crop off beautifully,” commented Matt Wells, Director of Field Services.
