ST. LOUIS, MO - Initiating a play to advance its merchandising strategies, Save A Lot has appointed a new leader to spearhead its growth. Thirty-year industry vet Trey Johnson has been named Chief Merchandising Officer and will oversee all areas of merchandising and quality assurance while working to strengthen the grocer’s existing relationships with its retail partners and vendors.

Trey Johnson, Chief Merchandising Officer, Save A Lot“I’m looking forward to supporting Save A Lot’s Retail Partners with an assortment that emphasizes great value and quality for consumers and delivers outstanding profitability to local owners and operators,” Johnson said of his new role. “Save A Lot’s commitment to remaining a hometown grocer while maintaining quality and value for families is one I’m excited to help build upon.”

Johnson has profound experience leading complex business operations, merchandising strategy and supply chain efforts, and working with prominent brands and organizations, according to a press release, having worked with popular names such as Albertsons, Jewel Food Stores, Walmart, SuperValu, and more.

Most recently, Johnson held the position of Executive Vice President, Chief Merchandising, Marketing, and Supply Chain Officer for The Save Mart Companies (TSMC). In this role, he oversaw various merchandising and supply chain teams, helping to implement programs and initiatives for the company, including new format development for TSMC with the Save Mart and Lucky innovation centers and merchandising strategy development for the Marketside format and brand for Walmart.

As he takes on the new role, Johnson will report directly to Save A Lot Chief Executive Officer Leon Bergmann.

Leon Bergmann, Chief Executive Officer, Save A Lot“With his strong track record of success in the grocery business, Trey brings a deep knowledge and understanding of the complex operations involved with merchandising strategies and tactical implementation,” said Bergmann. “We’re excited for him to leverage that experience to ensure that Save A Lot’s assortment positions our Retail Partners to win consistently in their markets.”

This C-suite appointment shortly follows Save A Lot's announcement to transition to a wholesale model.

With a new leader at the helm, I’m sure there is much more growth in store for the Save A Lot name. Stay tuned to ANUK as we report.
