Amazon Go Expands and Seeks Zero Carbon Certification

CALIFORNIA - Big news is coming out of Amazon’s Southern California store network. The retailer announced it will be expanding its Amazon Go format as well as pursuing Zero Carbon Certification with the International Living Future Institute (ILFI) for all stores in the Los Angeles, California, area.

Amazon announced it will be bringing two new Amazon Go locations to California, with new stores in Torrance and Woodland Hills. The total square footage of the Torrance, CA, store is approximately 6,100 square feet, according to a press release, and the store features the same Just Walk Out Shopping experience customers have come to appreciate from the other Amazon Go stores. The total square footage of the Woodland Hills store is approximately 5,000 square feet.

The retailer has revealed it is not only expanding the footprint of one of its banners, but is also pursuing Zero Carbon Certification with the International Living Future Institute (ILFI) for all of the Amazon Go stores in the Los Angeles, California, area

As Amazon Go seeks Zero Carbon Certification across its Los Angeles-area footprint, updates will also be applied to these two newest stores, in addition to the Amazon Go store that recently opened in Whittier, CA, in September 2022. As the press release stated, Amazon has made a company-wide commitment to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040 as part of The Climate Pledge.

To meet this certification, each of the stores have incorporated upgrades that help lower the company’s energy use and minimize its building’s operational carbon footprint, including an all-electric kitchen, water heating, and heat pumps for heating and cooling its stores with no onsite natural gas combustion. The store locations also reduce refrigeration system energy usage by utilizing doored walk-in coolers and freezers to support most of Amazon’s customer-facing chilled food offerings and use high-efficiency LED lighting throughout the stores.
