FISHERS, NY - Bob for Apples from New York—the New York Apple Association’s (NYAA) lovable mascot—is probably still reeling in excitement from a recent event. The apple advocate recently sponsored the 53rd TCS New York City Marathon, presenting New York state-grown apples to runners at the finish line while employing a variety of other strategies to spotlight the category.

“New York state apples are more than just a sentimental choice to be the ‘official apple’ of the TCS New York City Marathon; they are a logical choice as well,” said Cynthia Haskins, President and Chief Executive Officer of NYAA.

As part of the sponsorship, registered dietitian and nutrition spokesperson for the NYAA, Kelly Springer, joined NY apple grower and United Apple Sales’ Business Development Manager James Williams on ABC7 on Saturday for a half-hour special titled Countdown to the Starting Line. The fun-filled special included pre-race highlights and inspiring stories to provide viewers with a sneak peek ahead of the big event.

According to a press release, the New York Apple Association has long sponsored the marathon and its TV coverage on Marathon Sunday.

New York produces more than 250 different varieties each year, with around 30 specific varieties grown in larger volumes and distributed throughout the country. Two of those varieties—SnapDragon® and McIntosh—are being made available to all runners as they cross the famous Blueline during the race, the release added.

In addition, NYAA sponsored 15 runners that include New York state apple growers and members of the apple industry. For more information on the organization’s sponsorship of this highly-attended event, click here.

Cheers to crossing the finish line and being greeted with fresh apples!
