Trader Joe's Moving Closer to Connecticut Distribution Center

MONROVIA, CA – Trader Joe’s is looking to extend the popularity of its goods even further than its current reach. As the retailer scopes for a new home for a prospective $78.5 million distribution center, government officials in Bloomfield, Connecticut, have approved the chain for a property tax abatement.

Trader Joe’s is looking to build a 690,000-square-foot facility which will include an area for produce packing, in addition to a 90,000-square-foot area of frozen food storage. According to The Hartford Courant, the facility would employ around 675 people, including 150 transportation jobs.

The abatement was approved in a count of 8-0, as a 50 percent, four-year property tax break. This would save Trader Joe’s around $600,000 a year, and still allow the town to collect that amount in property taxes. If the retailer accepts the agreement, the company would have to remain in Bloomfield for an additional four years after the abatement ends, or pay back the $2.4 million it saved as part of the agreement.

This step is just the latest in Trader Joe’s imminent move towards a new distribution center. The retailer is supposedly scoping out a site in New York for the possible location as well.

Bloomfield Town Planner Jose Giner remains confident that Trader Joe’s will continue its move towards Connecticut, however, as he detailed the retailer has already filed permit applications to the town’s planning and zoning and wetlands commission.

Will Connecticut win the heart of Trader Joe’s for the new distribution center site, or will the retailer end up in New York? Stick with AndNowUKnow to find out.
