The White House Conference on Nutrition, Hunger and Health Held September 28; Cathy Burns Discusses

WASHINGTON, DC - Happy September! Not only does the month bring fall weather and the promise of exciting upcoming holidays, but it also marks a pivotal time period for the fresh produce sector. As the Biden Administration prepares to hold The White House Conference on Nutrition, Hunger, and Health on September 28, it will coincide with the International Fresh Produce Association (IFPA) Washington Conference on September 26–28.

Cathy Burns, Chief Executive Officer, International Fresh Produce Association“We are thrilled the White House has announced the Conference date for this September, and how fitting that the produce industry will be in town the same week taking our message to Capitol Hill on the importance of growing consumption of fruits and vegetables,” said Chief Executive Officer Cathy Burns. “The last week of September is now nutrition AND fresh produce week in Washington, and we will have the ears of our nation’s leaders in the days leading into the White House Conference, an event that will transform how our country eats, feeds, and nourishes itself for generations. If you can help build a vibrant future for all, you have to be in Washington this September to do it.”

The conference will bring together government leaders and stakeholders to launch a national strategy to eliminate hunger and reduce diet-related disease by 2030, a press release noted. The White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health was announced earlier this year after a multi-year Congressional effort. Since then, the White House has garnered significant stakeholder feedback, with IFPA mobilizing members to provide input and industry stories, providing recommendations to address nutrition security, and connecting with partners to determine a series of commitments for the industry and the association.

Earlier this year, the trade association also released its eight-point plan to the White House. As the event nears, IFPA will continue to provide updates to the industry and the opportunities that are sparked by the White House Conference.
