FRIESLAND, WI - No matter if they are baked, fried, or mashed, potatoes have been and will remain a staple for consumers. Giving retailers extra variety to add to their produce departments, Alsum Farms & Produce has announced the start of its Wisconsin red potato harvest, with the first loads already being washed, graded, and packed for delivery to distribution centers and grocers across the country.

Gold potato harvest has followed closely behind the company’s red potatoes, having gotten underway today, according to a press release. Alsum Farms’ russet potato harvest will begin shortly after on August 16 with the Pacific Russet variety, an early season potato that will be the first new crop Russets to be washed, packed, and shipped out within the Midwest and beyond. Wisconsin Fingerlings will also be ready to ship on August 16, while Wisconsin organic Russet, red, and gold potatoes are anticipated to be available for shipping starting August 9.

Alsum Farms grows and harvests potatoes that make their way to consumers using the Wisconsin Healthy Grown® Program. The eco-friendly program has helped guide the company’s farm sustainability practices for the past 25 years. As a founding member of the program, Alsum uses the Healthy Grown regenerative agriculture approach, strengthening ecosystems and community resilience. Showing its commitment to conservation practices and sustainability, Alsum has dedicated 27 acres to prairie restoration and pollinator habitat.

“In 1992 we began farming, and by 1996 helped establish the Wisconsin Healthy Grown Program,” added Alsum. “Since that time, the Healthy Grown program has continued to guide our farm sustainability practices utilizing Integrated Pest Management (IPM) to efficiently manage inputs, and implement conservation practices that enhance biological diversity and ecosystem efforts by certifying under the Healthy Grown standards.”

The grower offers its potatoes in a wide variety of pack options ranging from 12 oz to 50 packs. Alsum also offers poly, mesh, paper, or cartons.
