D'Arrigo New York Details Strong Apple Program; Dillon D'Arrigo Comments

BRONX, NY - Apples hold a part in the produce aisles as much as it is embedded in our culture; the phrase “Apple of my eye” is one well-known saying for a reason. D’Arrigo New York is also well-known in our industry for its history with apples, and this month is just the beginning.

Dillon D’Arrigo, Fruit Buyer/Sales, D’Arrigo New York“The season is shaping up to be similar to last season with the exception that there is smaller sizing across the board, and pricing is more expensive than usual (freight and weather issues),” Dillon D’Arrigo, Fruit Buyer/Sales, shared. “We are leaning a little more on the local crop again this year for those reasons.”

In its newsletter, D’Arrigo New York noted it sells 2.4 million pounds of local apples on average from September 1 through November 1. The company’s Michael D’Arrigo, Vice President and Director of Fruit Department, got his start in the “apple house,” and D’Arrigo New York is known as one of the largest apple houses in the Northeast.

Now, the company’s apple program is roughly 50/50 in terms of local product versus product out West.

Currently, the company’s staple varieties—Honeycrisp, Gala, Fuji, Granny Smith, and Pink Lady®—are still going strong. These varieties have been staples for the last two decades with Pink Lady being the newest member of the group.
