California Giant's Cindy Jewell Discusses Berry Program Before SEPC Southern Exposure 2019
WATSONVILLE, CA - Birds of a feather will be flocking together in Orlando, chirping with excitement at Southeast Produce Council’s (SEPC) Southern Exposure. As we gear up for the big day, I had the chance to speak with Cindy Jewell, VP of Marketing for California Giant Berry Farms, to learn about the company’s mentality going into the show.
“Since we have had some very wet weather in California, we will be talking to a lot to attendees about what to expect for spring berries in California and supply coming out of Mexico from now through springtime,” Cindy begins, highlighting Cal Giant’s key messaging at Southern Exposure. “Ideally, we want to make sure our customers are informed about supply so we can plan promotions together as volume increases this spring. We will also encourage attendees to subscribe to our e-trade newsletter that is distributed each week, which provides complete crop updates from each growing region in addition to promotional plans.”
As we make our way into the beginning of peak berry season, Cindy shares with me that Cal Giant is really excited to share with its trading partners that it offers year-round availability for all four berry types (strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries).
“Previously, we have had three out of four for most of the year,” she tells me, “but we have really focused on building our berry program to ensure we can provide year-round availability of all four—and for the first time it's happening in 2019!”
In addition to its extended berry program, Cindy explains that the company is also excited to show off the latest member of its Retail Sales team: Helena Beckett, who will be attending Southern Exposure for the first time with Cal Giant.
“We will also be featuring our 2nd annual Chef Invitational event since we announced we are accepting entries from our foodservice partners and their professional chefs,” she concludes.
