Continental Fresh’s Albert Perez Discusses Packaging at Southern Exposure
MIAMI, FL - When I think back to my time at this year's Southeast Produce Council's Southern Exposure, I can’t help but think of all the fresh produce innovations, with mangos holding a special place in my mind. I have Albert Perez from Continental Fresh to thank for that. I caught up with the CEO on the show floor to get the inside scoop on how the mango purveyor is keeping the tropical fruit fresh and its packaging sweeter.
The first thing that caught my attention when I stopped by the booth was the beautiful blue box. Continental Fresh is introducing a new 5-down box of mangos in a soft blue that features the company’s new label: Water for All.
“This box was designed in conjunction with the Mango Board and certain retailers in the country. It is a box that is going to improve the way that products arrive, as well as the palletization and ventilation of the product,” Albert tells me. “Certain retailers are starting to demand that particular box. It equates to about 3 of the 4-kilo boxes into one 5-down box. I think it’s something that’s really going to change the industry for us.”
Continental Fresh’s new packaging also comes with a new PLU sticker on each mango. These stickers signify the company’s commitment to social responsibility, specifically water projects across Latin America.
“We’re donating one cent per box of the sale of each of those mangos to water projects in Latin America to an organization called Blue Missions,” Albert continues. “Each of the mangos has a little waterdrop PLU sticker that has a website where consumers can go and see some of the works that we’re doing.”
With all the new packaging, it’s no wonder Albert was abuzz with excitement! He shares that the two announcements combine the three things that Continental Fresh values: people, produce, and positive impact.
