WATSONVILLE, CA - Regardless of the time of year, lettuce remains a staple category for consumers as they hit the grocery aisles with their shopping lists. “Currently, we are in the thick of our lettuce season and are growing in Watsonville and Santa Cruz County, California,” Brian explains. “We are growing little gems, red and green butter, Iceberg, red and green leaf, Romaine, and Romaine hearts.”

As Lakeside begins winding down its California growing region, the grower is reporting a tight market.

“Prepare for prices to be above seasonal averages until the transition to the desert in late November,” adds Brian.

Despite issues such as higher temperatures being reported across California, Lakeside’s volumes of lettuce are in line with what it recorded last year. However, Brian says that Impatiens Necrotic Spot Virus (INSV) issues are coming down the pipeline and could affect both organic and conventional volumes and supplies.

To maximize returns and keep lettuce sales on track, Lakeside urges retailers to carry a complete line of organic lettuce to appeal to shoppers’ growing demand for organic produce.
