FIREBAUGH, CA - Now in the heart of March, the spring weather in California is chasing all the cold winter aches out of my bones. Peri & Sons Farms is rejuvenating me as well as its retail partners with excitement for spring and summer with the recent announcement of its OnionXpress promotion, just in time for its onion-growing season.

Teri Gibson, Director of Marketing and Customer Relations, Peri & Sons Farms“Our OnionXpress promotion is a way to remind our customers that the onion varieties are changing over and to order, handle, and store the season’s new onions in ways best suited to their more delicate nature,” Teri Gibson, Director of Marketing and Customer Relations, tells me. “To celebrate the new season, Peri & Sons will send all customers a new OnionXpress t-shirt. This years’ design cleverly depicts the zeros in 2020 as onions. Over the years, these shirts have become a spring staple with customers asking us, ‘When will we be getting a new shirt?’”

And rightly so! After seeing them, I wanted one for myself. The design takes inspiration from Peri & Sons’ own farm-fresh onions, grown right in the Central San Joaquin and Imperial Valleys of California. The season spans from March through August, providing retailers and consumers ample time to enjoy the wonderful attributes onions have to offer. To help with retail customers, the onion grower is also providing an updated Ad-Planner to help retailers plan their promotions around Peri & Sons various promotion packs throughout the year.

But what are the various varieties that the grower has to offer? Teri tells me that for the spring/summer season Peri & Sons provides “short-day” varieties of red, white, yellow, and sweet onions. Spring/summer onion varieties are called “short-day” because they are planted in the fall and their growing patterns are matched to days with shorter periods of sunlight.

“You will primarily see these differences on the skin of the onion,” Teri elaborates. “Spring onions have thin, light-colored and mottled skin. In addition, spring onions have a higher water ratio, which makes them softer. Because of this, spring onions have a shorter shelf-life during the months of March through August and a higher tendency to mark, nick, or bruise.”

So, handle with care, folks!

The delicious varieties should be treated like the amazing jewels they deserve to be. With the versatility in applications that onions have to offer, the work would definitely be worth it for the end-consumer.
