CALIFORNIA - Rain, wind, and snow continue to move across the state of California as yet another major weather pattern passes over. Southern California in particular is being hit with stormy weather today, prompting warnings for the area.

The National Weather Service stated that heavy rain and snow and powerful winds blowing in from the North will be impacting Southern California today, January 9, 2023. The Orange County Register reported that warnings have been put out in regard to massive waves and intense rip currents along the coast. Atmospheric rivers continue to bring precipitation throughout the state, including regions from Salinas to Oxnard, seeing continued or potential heavy rain.

With all of this wet weather hitting California, we are left to wonder how the state’s drought status has changed. The Sacramento Bee reported that rivers and creeks have flooded throughout Northern California, providing what could be short-term drought relief. Wet and windy weather rained down on California over the weekend and is continuing into the beginning of this week, bringing snow to the Sierras as potential flooding in at-risk areas.

As such, California’s reservoirs are filling up again and have reached levels higher than they have been in quite some time. Last week, we reported that California’s snowpack had nearly reached record levels, and that is expected to support a third of the state’s water resources.
