Eagle Eye Produce's Dallin Klinger Talks Strong Market Conditions and Higher Pricing

IDAHO FALLS, ID - I can always count on my friend Dallin Klingler of Eagle Eye Produce for a timely and insightful market update. I recently checked in with the Marketing Communications Manager to see how Eagle Eye’s potato season is coming along, taking a look at current market conditions and pricing.

Dallin Klinger, Marketing Communications Manager, Eagle Eye Produce“Overall markets are steady compared to previous years,” he began. “Pricing is up quite a bit for larger-sized Russets due to tight supply. A 40 count box of Idaho Russet potatoes is up about $6-$10 on average from this time last year.”

Eagle Eye Produce started harvesting in early August in western Idaho and will continue through October as the grower shifts to crops on the eastern side of the state. Additionally, Eagle Eye will be harvesting in Nevada in mid-September and is currently harvesting in Washington state as well.

Dallin relayed that Russet potato markets are strong, and he expects them to stay that way for the next several weeks as new crop shipments increase. The tight supply of especially larger-sized Russet potatoes have also contributed to a strong market. Furthermore, Eagle Eye is seeing excellent quality red and yellow potatoes with steady volumes.

“As most know by now, this growing season presented very little moisture and high temperatures throughout the Pacific Northwest. That being said, we have been impressed by our growing team and partners who have worked hard to bring quality product to market despite Mother Nature not cooperating,” said Dallin.

Weather conditions have also played a role in the upward trend of smaller-sized potatoes this season. In conclusion, Dallin stated that yields will be down for potato growers throughout the Pacific Northwest, which will make for strong and active markets as we round out the season.

You can bet that Dallin and I will continue to talk taters throughout the year, so keep checking in with us.
