MEXICO CITY - A leadership shift is underway at Walmart’s Mexico and Central America division, as Ignacio Caride has stepped down from both the Chief Executive Officer role and the Board of Directors. According to Reuters, the move comes just over a year after Caride assumed the position and was described by analysts as unexpected.

Cristian Barrientos Pozo, current CEO of Walmart Chile and former Senior Vice President of Operations at Walmart de Mexico, will step in as interim CEO. The company noted Barrientos brings over 26 years of retail experience, with strengths in expansion strategy, store development, and digital transformation.

The transition follows Walmart de Mexico’s recent second-quarter results, which showed an 8 percent increase in sales but a 10 percent drop in net profit, with executives citing a slower recovery in consumer spending. Analysts acknowledged that while the change may cause short-term volatility, Barrientos’ familiarity with the region could help maintain stability.
