Welcome to Behind the Greens! Matt Linder, Broccoli Product Manager, Sakata Seed, joins AndNowUKnow from the company's Salinas research station to introduce varieties from its new genetics. The company is trying to create varieties that are multi-use and varieties that are specifically for crown cut. The market is shifting to crown cut, and although they are still doing multi-use varieties, the company is concentrating on varieties with a mushroom shape and short trim.
In 2013, Sakata Seed will be celebrating its 100 year anniversary. In celebration of that historic event, the company will be presenting a Centennial Line of products starting with Centennial broccoli.
Centennial broccoli is a beautiful crown cut variety for cold season. It is a heavy-headed, small-beaded variety, that can be grown nearly year round. The variety loves the cold weather and is representative of Sakata's genetics and its commitment to the broccoli market. One of the new adaptable varieties for crown cut is the Emerald Crown. It is especially suited for the short trim and crown cut markets. It has a nice high dome and is blue-green colored, smooth and mushroom shaped. It fits the short trim and crown cut markets. The company is concentrating on new genetics which will bring the company into the future.
