GLENVILLE, GA – As categories throughout the industry calibrate according to winter weather, providers are already looking ahead at the market for upcoming crops. As spring approaches, the onion market looks to be strong in the lead-up to peak Vidalia and sweet onion season.

Bland Farms is currently wrapping up its Mexico season, and preparing for a spring full of sweet onions out of Texas and Vidalia’s from Georgia. As COO Troy Bland recently told me, weather has prepped the company for an excellent season in all regions.

Troy Bland, COO, Bland Farms“Recent weather has been great for our crops. We have had a little bit of rain in the Vidalia region, but have been able to get right back into the fields after,” Troy tells me of the upcoming Vidalia season. “At this time, it looks like the crop is going to pack earlier, but there is still a tremendous amount of days to go through.”

Bland saw a better January this year than in recent years, with Troy stating the month was flush with sweet onion sales. The company expects this trend to continue further into the spring for sweet and Vidalia onions.

Troy also tells me that the Mexican market is slightly lower than in recent years, but Bland is comfortable in where the market is sitting and where the company thinks it will head.

“We have strong quality and ample volume during our Mexico season,” Troy continues.

As consumers prepare their palates for the upcoming sweet and Vidalia onions season, Bland is finding further success with cross-promotional opportunities in its Vidalia Brand products. Retailers can find increased sales with the company’s snack foods, condiments, and new line of all-natural dressings.
