Carrots are experiencing good quality, good weather and good supplies, but are there any surprises in store for suppliers as we head into fall? Sarah Hoxie spoke with 4 industry professionals to get their assessment.
Andrew Bianchi, Sales Manager at Kern Ridge Growers, discussed their current harvest underway in Cuyama, CA. "Weather is not affecting us, and we have excellent production and supplies. The color is very nice. It's a good time of year to promote carrots."
Bob Borda, Director of Retail Sales for Bolthouse Farms, stated that "the weather has been ideal. We've had good yields out of Cuyama as well as Salinas. Prosser is also coming along very well, as is Leamington. Leamington was a bit behind, but their yields are looking good."
Phil Gruszka, VP of Sales and Marketing at Grimmway Farms, discussed the good weather and how it has helped production. "We're really looking forward to a great fall. Supplies are very strong. Since we ship 52 weeks out of the year, there's not a tremendous amount of seasonality in terms of our carrots. We have to be ready all year round."
Matt Curry, President of Curry & Company, stated that "the weather was ideal during planting, which was not the case last year. We have new varieties that we're using to promote the interest in sweet carrots. We've been working with seed variety producers towards that end. We're working with a new cello pack that should stand out on store shelves."
