A cool Spring is delaying the Georgia peach harvest. The state which represents about two million packages in the peach industry, has experienced very cool weather this Spring.

Will McGehee, Marketing Director, tells AndNowUKnow, "Winter was warm but when it got to February the weather became very cool and slowed things down. Significant volumes will begin to ship a few weeks later than last year. Volumes will not be affected as Georgia peach growers will make it up on the backend."

The Georgia Peach Council is projecting around 1.8 to 2 million, 25 lb cartons.

On the flip side a cooler spring slows the growing process and creates bigger peaches. As the Summer heats up, the warmer temperatures will help with flavor, resulting in peaches that are big and flavorful.

The 90 day season typically lasts from mid-May to mid-August. Each member grows approximately 30 varieties each which allows Georgia to offer a steady supply as retailers want to ensure there is a consistent flow of product.
