YAKIMA, WA- With the Washington cherry harvest underway, Domex Superfresh Growers® has released its May Orchard Update which is focusing on the current cherry harvest. According to the company, the second week of cherry season has begun and the crop is looking great with high volumes and ample sizing.

Dave Gleason, Chief Horticulturist of Kershaw Companies, a member of Domex Superfresh Growers, 
discusses why Eastern Washington is home to some of the best cherries on Earth.

“Domex Superfresh Growers cultivate their fruit in an arid climate that averages less than 7” of rainfall per year. With the reduced risk of rain damage, cherries are able to focus their attention on developing maximum sweetness,” Dave says. The company’s cherry orchards receive an abundance of water thanks to the snow pack in the Cascade Mountains and water is transported to the trees via irrigation systems across the valley.

According to Dave, Domex supplies cherries for six to seven weeks due to the diversity of cherry varieties and the staggered harvest dates.

“Rainier cherries, for example, take a few more days to reach their maximum sweetness compared to Chelan cherries,” Dave continues. “In addition, orchards placed in higher elevations typically require more time to develop perfect cherries. These two factors allow their harvest dates to be spread out over the months of June and July, ensuring that you’ll be able to enjoy Superfresh cherries all summer long!”
