The National Weather Service has issued a freeze warning for a large swath of Georgia, to begin at midnight and extend through 9 a.m. Saturday.

In high elevations, temperatures are expected to drop into the middle 20s while temperatures in the central Georgia area should remain in the low 30s.

Charles Hall, Executive Director of Georgia Fruit and Vegetable Grower’s Association noted that if temperatures fall to the low 20s for an extended period of time, growers of recently planted crops such as cabbage and broccoli –which can typically escape a light frost unscathed – could see some damage.

The freeze is not expected to damage stone fruits, as trees in the area have largely not begun to bud.

Those with agricultural interests in the warned area are advised to harvest or protect tender vegetation.
