Melon 1 Prepares For The Future With Strong Leadership and Year-Round High-Quality Watermelons; Rachel Syngo Discusses

PUNTA GORDA, FL - With plenty of demand to meet for year-round watermelon, in quantity and quality, Melon 1 has conscientiously worked with growers to expand to a North Carolina fall crop, as well as a Georgia fall crop.

Rachel Syngo, Chief Marketing Officer, Melon 1

"We have had a fall crop in Florida for the last 15 years, and we will continue to do that. However, with the added acreage in North Carolina and Georgia, we needed to analyze not only the ability to grow and harvest with the weather in those regions, but ensuring that our sales team and retail partners would be prepared to move that fruit to stores. We're excited to keep up the momentum and increase U.S. watermelon production in those states in a new production window," Rachel Syngo, Chief Marketing Officer, shared with me from the Georgia fields.

Diving into what buyers need to know about Melon 1, she pointed out that everything the company does is with intention.

"We are growing the varieties that have the best research and development to ensure solid yields in the fields, which directly translates to high-quality watermelons in inventory for our retail partners. We continually surpass the compliance regulations put forth by the government and the retail partners, and we bring that level of food safety and responsible sourcing to every load of watermelons," she shared at a time when the category is highly sought after.

The growth the company is experiencing goes beyond its supply, as Rachel shared with me how Melon 1 is enjoying the shoulder season of eras within the company. As I get to know more about Melon 1, Rachel told me two important facts: The folks behind the brand do this because they love it, and the current Melon 1 ownership team is focused on working with all employees and leaders within the company to strengthen its foundation amid transitioning to the next generation.

"We have employees who have been with us for 10 or even 20 years, and we want all of them to feel secure in the future of the company as it continues to transition. Each season in watermelon farming is different, but that is what makes us great at what we do. These conversations are not always easy, but they are essential if we want to remain strong in our performance," she explained. "We're also encouraging that each of the family farms we work with consider what steps they need to take to make sure the next generation is ready when the time comes."

In recent years, Trey Miller, Marian Lapide, and Ross Chastain have all stepped into key leadership roles, along with Rachel herself. With 11 years at the company, she oversees overall marketing programs and consumer service, working directly with harvest teams on work contracts, employment policy, and summer internship programs.

Trey, Chief Operating Officer, oversees every bin of watermelons—over 750,000 annually—shipped to customers.

"Trey works with our farms, harvest crews, and quality control team. He has been fundamental in growing Melon 1 to where it is today since joining the team 19 years ago, and he has held many company roles prior to becoming the COO in 2020," Rachel observed. "Our Owner, Ross Chastain, is the newest partner at Melon 1. While he is a full-time NASCAR driver, he is also actively involved in the operations of the company and our overall grower relationships. Ross spends a significant amount of time focusing on advocating for the watermelon industry and overall American agriculture."

Marian has been with Melon 1 for 5 years, and her role as Sales and Marketing Manager positions her to complement Rachel in moving necessary information internally and externally. She is actively involved in day-to-day sales and order management for the team's highest volume sales accounts, as well as overseeing trade show, consumer, and trade media programs.

"Growing, packing, and shipping watermelons is a passion for every person who works at Melon 1. Not only at our own watermelon farm, but also every one of the 26 family farms we work with. It is not easy, but we feel grateful to get to do what we do. Food security is National security, so today, tomorrow, and the next day, be sure to thank a farmer," Rachel concluded.

As the company deepens its grower network and builds out its next generation of leadership, Melon 1 heads into the season with a clear message for its retail partners: the best is still ahead.
