The Secretary of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food has declared a multitude of municipalities and growing regions south of Mexico City and in Puebla, as natural disaster zones following a severe frost in early March. The icy conditions, described as extraordinary, hit 275 hectares of Columbian pomegranates, peaches, and plums resulting in fruit burns and damaged sprouts on March 2nd and 3rd, according to El Sol de Cuautla

150 hectares of avocados were damaged as well. The hard frost burned flowers, young fruit and shoots. The declaration will lend aid to low income producers in the area who are without some form of public or private insurance.

The declaration took effect on Wednesday April 10, after the publication in the Official Journal of the Federation, thus affected producers may utilize the budget resources of the Rural Support Fund for Climate Contingencies, in accordance with the Expenditure Budget of the Federation 2013.
