Michoacan is Now the Leading Producer of Strawberries in Mexico
With 4,900 hectares of cultivated strawberries, Michoacán has become the largest producer of Mexican strawberries, harvesting 275,340 tons of the fruit, according to MiMorelia. This leaves Baja California as the second largest producer with 37% of the production, said the delegate of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA) in Michoacán, Antonio Guzman Castaneda.
Castaneda also noted that the producers of Mexican strawberries contribute significant to the creation of employment in rural areas, helping the state of Guanajuato to rank third with 7% of the production of strawberries.
Michoacán exports 121,942 tons of the fruit abroad and distributes 153,398 tons to the domestic market. Baja California exports 50,996 tons to the world and 33,999 tons to the domestic market. Guanajuato exports 1,842 tons to the world and 7,370 tons domestically, according to MiMorelia.
Michoacán markets strawberries mainly to Canada, Spain, UK, Northern Ireland, Japan, USA, Holland Belize, Brazil, Chile, and France, to name a few.
