Oneonta Kicks Off 2014 Cherry Harvest
Oneonta Starr Ranch Growers has kicked off its 2014 Northwest cherry harvest. With the season getting underway the last weekend of May, Oneonta Marketing Director Scott Marboe said early signs point to a great season.
“We started harvest this weekend,” Marboe said on June 2. “The fruit is looking very nice, really clean with a good range of size. Our field staff and Mother Nature have done a great job so far.”
Volumes “should really start to pick up by the weekend, and next week will be a good time to start with those early season programs,” Marboe notes.

The company anticipates plentiful opportunities to promote until the end of August. In addition to the abundant dark sweet cherries, Oneonta produces the tender, sweet light-blush Rainier. Marboe said, “Our Rainier harvest will start in about two weeks. This is a special cherry that needs to be picked just right; so we really make sure to harvest them at the optimum times.”
Demand for the Northwest fruit has picked up in recent days as California winds down.
