Strong Northerly Winds and Cool Temps Move Through Desert Growing Regions
Strong northerly winds will be moving along the Lower Colorado River Valley and the Southeast of California today and into Wednesday bringing winds of up to 30 mph to the region. Although not uncommon in the desert for the winter, strong gusts could cause wind burn to leafy vegetables and some damage or discoloration from leaves rubbing against each other, growers tell us.
The high pressure building off of the California Coast and being squeezed by a cold trough to the east may also result in light to moderate lettuce ice in the eastern Yuma valleys today and Tuesday.
According to Terry Snow’s Weather Advisory Service, ice could potentially increase Wednesday into Friday and could become light to moderate-heavy ice by Friday in the eastern and southern Yuma valleys.
