California has seen quite a few heavy bouts of wind in recent weeks that are affecting prime growing areas. Cropped Images May 20st 2 2013Salinas growers noted that the winds from Sunday & Monday may have caused additional dehydration and wind burn in the leafy items in addition to some of the damage from previous windy days that hit the Valley this month.

Of the leafy items, Spinach and Romaine are probably the most affected of the crops one Salinas grower tells AndNowUKnow. So far, the damage is limited. Assessments will occur throughout the next few weeks.

The San Joaquin Valley is experiencing gusty winds again as well, along with dry weather that may be taking its toll on crops in the region.

A low pressure trough will move in to the region today and Wednesday, cooling temperatures into the mid 70's and low 80's. Winds have been ranging between 20 mph and 25 mph this week with a trough strengthening the pressure gradient in the valley that could bring winds of up to 40 mph by Wednesday. The region has already felt a sting from previous windy weather complications on stone fruit and almonds.
