SEATTLE, WA - Starbucks’ Chief Operating Officer and former Sam’s Club CEO, Rosalind Brewer, will join Amazon’s Board of Directors, the company announced in an SEC filing this week. Brewer is the only person of color and one of four woman on the company’s current Board roster. Amazon also appointed her to its leadership development and compensation committee.

Brewer has been the Group President, Americas and Chief Operating Officer of Starbucks Corporation since October 2017 and a Director on the coffee titain’s Board since March 2017 before that. Prior to her work with Starbucks, from February 2012 to February 2017, Brewer served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Sam’s Club, a division of Walmart. She has held numerous leadership positions at Walmart, according to Amazon’s SEC filing, as well as a Directorial position on the Board of defense technology company Lockheed Martin Corporation.

Over her long career, Brewer has made a number of historical firsts in the corporate world. She is the second black woman to have ever served as a Director of Amazon, according to CNN, and was both the first African American and the first woman to ever lead a Walmart division. Forbes also named Brewer among its most powerful women in 2018.

With experience leading an e-commerce-focused grocer like Sam’s Club under her belt, all eyes are on Brewer as she joins Amazon, which is still looking to tighten up strategy for its recently acquired Whole Foods chain. As reported by Fortune when Brewer left Sam’s Club, she had been instrumental in the retailer’s click-and-collect and scan-and-go programs. Brewer also sought to overhaul Sam’s Club’s grocery offerings during her time as CEO, announcing at one point that she would increase the average household income of a Sam’s shopper to $100,000 from $80,000.
