SpartanNash to Close Statesboro, Georgia Distribution Center

BYRON CENTER, MI - SpartanNash is shuttering its wholesale grocery distribution center in Statesboro, Georgia, cutting about 60 jobs, its only facility in that region of the state.

Meredith Gremel, Vice President for Corporate Affairs and Communications, SpartanNash"Statesboro distribution center had one large customer that we serviced, which that customer will easily be serviced through the Columbus, Georgia, facility, and there are advantages to that customer to be serviced out of Columbus," Meredith Gremel, SpartanNash Vice President for Corporate Affairs and Communications, commented, according to the Statesboro Herald, on the decision to close. "This is an ongoing analysis that we look at."

As for employees, the nearest employment opportunity with SpartanNash would be at its Columbus distribution center, just over 200 miles away.

"It's a very difficult decision to have to close a facility, but as a company with facilities around the country, at times you have to consolidate and make that difficult decision so that you can ensure that we're making the right choice for the total company."

The current timeline, according to the retailer, is that the doors of the 240,000-square-foot facility will officially close around May 28th, and human resource team members are currently working with those employed at the facility one-on-one to help with the transition.

This closure will bring SpartanNash’s total to 17 distribution centers serving 47 states, according to the report, seven of which supply the military. Currently the company distributes to about 2,100 U.S. stores not under its banner, while operating about 160 of its own.
