Sysco, Kroger, and SUPERVALU Offer Aid In the Wake of Hurricane Sandy

New York City, NY

As the East Coast’s storm slowly calms down, reports state grocery retailers like SUPERVALU and Kroger along with relief organizations are reaching out to consumers in need.

Spokesman Mike Siemienas, SUPERVALU, says though some stores are mandated to remain closed, the company is focused on saving much food as possible.

"But for the stores that are accessible, we continue to work to get to them open as quickly as possible. We are deploying and redeploying generators and refrigerator trucks to stores that need them to avoid food spoilage."

Michael Schlotman, chief financial officer of Kroger Co., said though the stores on the East Coast were not much impacted, the company has been affected by hurricanes in other parts of the United States in the past and has seen spikes in sales before and after as people stock up on items.

"It usually evens out in terms of sales as the event unfolds. But you don't necessarily make up what you lost in perishable products or in damage to your stores."

Sysco Corp. stated it is in touch with local Federal Emergency Management Agencies and American Red Cross units to help get equipment where needed.

Officials state Hurricane Sandy is responsible for claiming at least 50 deaths in the United States.
