The Chilean grape season is going to be a little lighter than normal this year. The grapes were subject to rain in early January with the effects just now manifesting. The region was hit by 2 inches of rain in some areas which can be detrimental to grapes. Flames were ready to be harvested as the rains hit which created just enough of a situation to complicate things. In addition, dry Spring weather led to smaller sizes and a delay and harvest. North Chile has experienced a two year drought that has greatly affected sizing for grapes.

Chile is seeing a sizable reduction in flames, and industry professionals note that it will be interesting to see what happens as the fruit arrives this week and next week, as transportation itself can prove a challenge to quality when grapes are in transit for approximately two weeks.
The industry may be seeing about 20% to 25% less volume for Chilean grapes then has been projected out of the Central region for this time of year. Now is the time frame when the largest volume of flames for the season are supposed to be hitting the market. In a few weeks Chile will transition out of flames into the Crimson variety.
The market for grapes is still fairly strong, but will be adjusting to more volume arriving from Chile. The market on both colors should ease down in the coming weeks, one grower notes.
