Gordon Food Service Expands into Detroit Market

DETROIT, MI - Gordon Food Service is expanding its brick-and-mortar presence after setting up its first shop in Detroit, Michigan. The new store opened this past Monday.

According to a report by Crain’s, the new-concept, 16,000-square-foot store will offer fresh seasonal produce, grab-and-go options, fresh juice, online ordering, and more perks that differentiate it from competitors in the market.

Mark Dempsey, Marketing Manager, Gordon Food Service“[The Detroit store] is our largest assortment and our next iteration in stores from a décor and product offering standpoint,” said Marketing Manager Mark Dempsey. “What we’re trying to do is make our stores relevant to today’s shopper both for home and for business. So, we’re getting fresher, both in produce and in bakery and in meats. We’re adding convenience items for home shoppers. We’re still here for this business customer.”

The news source also notes that this store opening bolsters Gordon Food Service’s dive into smaller-scale, everyday shopping, broadening its 170-store network in addition to its foodservice and bulk operations.

The new store will offer fresh seasonal produce, grab-and-go options, fresh juice, online ordering, and more

“We just think the time and the market is ready,” Dempsey continued. “We’re opening on this area of Jefferson Avenue that has seen great population growth and redevelopment, and it seems that they need great shopping to go along with it.”
