George F. Sorn, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Florida Fruit & Vegetable Association, has passed away on February 23 at the age of 86. For exactly forty years, starting January 1, 1953 to December 31, 1992, George led a highly successful, prosperous career with the FFVA.

Even as a young man, George’s roots were grounded in the produce and agricultural industry, working in the fields of New Jersey and graduating from Rutgers University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture, with honors.

He first started his career with the FFVA as an Assistant Manager of the association’s Labor Division before being promoted to division manager in 1967. He quickly became known as one of the foremost authorities on farm labor throughout Florida and the U.S. as he rose up the ranks to Executive Vice President and General Manager of FFVA in 1984.

One of his biggest contributions to the FFVA was the creation of its Environmental and Pest Management Division, which assisted the association’s members in effectively dealing with crop protection and water issues. He worked with Florida growers to solve issues dealing with immigration reform, the North American Free Trade Agreement, and maintaining access to crop protection tools. Some of his honors include the FFVA Distinguished Service Award, a Resolution of Appreciation by the Florida Cabinet for “Exemplary Public Service in the Field of Agriculture,” an Award of Merit for “Distinguished Service to the Food and Agricultural Industry of Florida,” among many others.

George is survived by his wife Joyce and daughter Valerie.

AndNowUKnow would like to extend our deepest condolences to George’s family and friends.
