Obama Delays Deportation for Immigrants for Three Years



WASHINGTON, D.C. - President Obama unveiled his immigration reform plans to the country on Thursday night, announcing three new steps he will take to increase accountability. These actions include:

  • Cracking down on illegal immigration at the border
    • Additional resources for law enforcement personnel will increase the chances that anyone attempting to cross the border illegally will be caught and sent back
  • Deporting felons, not families
    • Only those who threaten national security and public safety will be deported
    • Anyone suspected of terrorism, violent criminals, gang members, and recent border crossers are placed at the top of the deportation priority list
  • Holding accountable certain undocumented immigrants by requiring they pass a background check and pay taxes
    • Those who register with the government, have lived in the U.S. for more than five years, have children who are American citizens or illegal residents, have passed a criminal background check, and are willing to pay their fair share of taxes, may temporarily stay in the country without fear of deportation for three years at a time
    • Legal status can be renewed, administration officials say, but this does not open the door to citizenship or allow access to federal health care benefits, according to ABC News

Administration officials also state that the President’s actions will extend legal status to “DREAMers,” or those who came to the U.S. at a young age, so long as they entered the country before January 1, 2010 and meet specific education and public safety criteria, regardless of how old they are today.

During his speech, Obama fired back at his critics, emphasizing that this plan is not amnesty. “What I’m describing is accountability,” he said. “A common sense, middle-ground approach. If you meet the criteria, you can come out of the shadows and get right with the law. If you’re a criminal, you’ll be deported. If you plan to enter the U.S. illegally, your chances of getting caught and sent back just went up.”

“The actions I’m taking are not only lawful, they’re the kinds of actions taken by every single Republican president and every single Democratic president for the past half century,” Obama continued.

Prior to the announcement Thursday, United Fresh issued a statement saying, “While this Executive Order may provide some minimal relief or help for agriculture, it doesn’t address any long-term solutions which can only be done through congressional action.

Tom Nassif, President and CEO of Western Growers, shared a similar sentiment, noting that agriculture must remain a top priority to achieve meaningful reform legislation. “The value of agricultural workers to our country’s economy and food production system must be recognized with a path to legal status that acknowledges their past service and ongoing importance to this industry.”

Several Republicans and Democrats have already questioned Obama’s actions, criticizing his move to bypass Congress.

In a statement, House Speaker John Boehner proclaimed, “The president has said before that ‘he’s not king’ and he’s ‘not an emperor,’ but he sure is acting like one. And he’s doing it at a time when the American people want nothing more than for us to work together.”

ABC News reports that Senator Joe Donnelly, D-Indiana, said, “I am as frustrated as anyone that Congress is not doing its job, but the President shouldn’t make such significant policy changes on his own.”

In response to congressional inaction on reform, Obama said, “And to those members of Congress who question my authority to make our immigration system work better or question the wisdom of me acting where Congress has failed, I have one answer: Pass a bill.”

Obama’s Immigration Accountability Executive Actions will benefit nearly 5 million undocumented immigrants, as well as “help secure the border and ensure that everyone plays by the same rule,” according to a press release issued by the White House.  

Obama now plans to travel to Las Vegas on Friday to promote his plans for immigration reform. In closing, the President emphasized that “we are and always will be a nation of immigrants,” and also that scripture tells us, “We shall not oppress a stranger, for we know the heart of a stranger. We were strangers once, too.”

Aldi Considering Entering the Chinese Market



ESSEN, NORTH RHINE-WESTPHALIA - Aldi is currently mulling over the possibility of entering the potent Chinese retail market. According to Reuters, the German discount grocery chain is looking for new areas for growth outside of its traditional mature markets. With China still largely untapped by outside retail chains, the country must present a tantalizing possibility. Consultancy Planet Retail is reporting, however, that if Aldi does decide to expand into China, it does not expect the retailer to do so until 2018 at the earliest.

"Aldi thinks in decades rather than years, so the general conditions and the long-term outlook with higher single-digit growth rates in real terms look promising (in China)," said Matthias Queck, Research Director at Planet Retail.

The rumors began when the German monthly, Manager Magazin, reported that Aldi's controlling families had decided in February 2013 that it was worth looking into the possibility of Chinese expansion. In such a case, Aldi Sued would be responsible for entering the Chinese market while Aldi Nord would decide on two additional countries to enter afterward No time frame was specified, however.

C.H. Robinson Partners with Minnesota NBC Affiliate for KARE 11 Food Fight



EDEN PRAIRIE, MN – C.H. Robinson has partnered with Twin Cities NBC affiliate KARE 11 in order to hold its annual one-day food and fund drive, the KARE 11 Food Fight.

This unique, creative event pits KARE 11's four anchors, Belinda Jensen, Julie Nelson, Eric Perkins and Randy Shaver, against each other to see who can raise the most food to benefit Second Harvest Heartland, a foundation dedicated to fighting hunger in Minnesota.

In all, the company will be donating over 200 volunteer hours and more than 25,000 pounds of food for the event, according to a press release.

Preventing hunger and providing food assistance are top priorities of the C.H. Robinson Foundation, and the Food Fight has been a powerful force for good towards both of these goals. 2013's Food Fight raised more than 860,000 pounds of food and C.H. Robinson is looking forward to an equally strong showing this year.

From 7:30 am to 7:00 pm on Tuesday, November 25th, community members are encouraged to bring food or cash donations to drop-off locations at Whole Foods in Maple Grove, Byerly’s in Minnetonka, Cub Foods in Eagan, and Kowalski’s in Woodbury. Online donations can also be made through Second Harvest Heartland's website. C.H. Robinson and KARE 11 will be providing special guests and fun activities at each of the sites in order to encourage community participation. All donations from this event will go towards supporting Second Harvest Heartland, a foundation which supports over 530,000 individuals annually. For every 1.2 pounds of food donated, Second Harvest Heartland is able provide one meal to those Minnesotans experiencing the stress of hunger.

Whole Foods' Co-CEO Walter Robb Planning More Than 80 New Canadian Stores Over the Next Two Years



OTTAWA, CANADA - Whole Foods' Co-CEO Walter Robb has his eye on Canada. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal's Paul Vieira, he explained that the retailer has plans to open over 80 new stores over the next two years, bringing Whole Food's Canadian store base close to 100.

“Our efforts in Canada are part of the effort to grow,” Robb explained. “We think the opportunity for fresh, healthy foods is larger now that it’s ever been. And we intend to grow as fast as we have ever grown — 40 new stores next year, 42-44 for the following year. That’s 10% square footage growth on top of 15 million square feet of retail we already have. People have said maybe we should stop our growth. I said, No, we are not going to do that because our strategy is working. There’s no reason to stop. There’s every reason to keep going.”

Whole Foods has just finished the construction of its 10th Canadian location in Ottawa. According to the Wall Street Journal, Robb was on-site for the launch of this 41,000 square foot establishment, where he shared with Vieira his company's secret to its impressive growth.

“We price to every market that we serve every time we open a store,” he shared. “We are running a number of initiatives, particularly with perishable items, in the U.S. with some success right now. I would invite you to go and compare and see what we’ve done. We have worked hard on the pricing on this store, and to be competitive in Ottawa.”

“This is a dance between price, value and quality,” Robb continued. “It’s a constant dance. We don’t all sell the same stuff. Part of our thing is to be relevant on price so that we can also bring the quality to the marketplace. We are not endeavoring to be in a race to the bottom, but a new top in quality.”

Just having posted record total sales of $3.3 billion along with EBITDA of $296 million, or 9.1% of sales, Robb's strategy certainly seems to be an effective one. I look forward to watching how Whole Foods continues to evolve and and grow its presence in North America.

New York Apple Association Helps to Raise Over $129,000 for the American Cancer Society



FISHERS, NY – The New York state apple industry held an apple tasting fundraiser that raised $10,001 for the American Cancer Society®’s (ACS) Central New York Region, bringing the New York Apple Association's (NYAA) total contributions to $129,000.11 since the year 2000. The funds were raised through sales of New York state apples, cider and applesauce at the Great New York State Fair held August 21 – September 1.

Thousands of fairgoers visited the NYAA booth this year to purchase a refreshing snack.  NYAA donated apples and cider, which were provided respectively by Red Jacket Orchards in Geneva and Beak & Skiff Apple Orchards in Lafayette, according to a press release.  Mott’s also donated applesauce.

Target Reinforcing Natural Foods Push After Better than Expected Q3 2014



MINNEAPOLIS, MN – Target has laid out plans for a stronger push on the food section moving forward.

Brian Cornell, Chairman and CEO, Target CorporationIn the company’s earnings conference call, Brian Cornell, Chairman and CEO of Target Corporation said, “We believe we should continue to present a meaningful food offering in our stores and online. But we need to ensure that our food offering is uniquely Target and clearly differentiated from our competitors.”

To help maintain that differentiation, Target’s identity and food will continue to involve a combination of national brands alongside the retailer’s exclusive brands. 

Cornell added that Target’s team is stepping back and “listening to the guests, really understanding what the Target guest is looking for in food. From an assortment standpoint, from a newness standpoint, we talked about the fact that as we go forward, you should expect to see more natural and organic offerings.”

This news comes after the release of Target Corporation’s third quarter results.

“We’re pleased with our third quarter financial results, which were driven by better-than-expected performance in our U.S. segment,” said Brian Cornell, Chairman and CEO of Target Corporation. “We’re encouraged by the improving trend we’ve seen in our U.S. business throughout the year, and our fourth quarter plans are designed to sustain this momentum.”

For this quarter, the retailer saw U.S. segment sales increase 1.9% to $17.3 billion from $16.9 billion last year and Canadian segment sales increase 43.8% to $479 million from $333 million last year.

Cornell added, “In Canada, we’ve made improvements to our operations, pricing and assortment in time for the holiday season, and we’re eager to measure how our guests respond. The entire company is energized as we approach the peak of the holiday shopping season, and we are looking forward to delivering an outstanding store and digital experience to our guests.”

Other highlights from the quarter include:

  • Third quarter adjusted EPS of $0.54 was above the expected range of $0.40 to $0.50.
  • U.S. segment transactions declined 0.4 percent, an improvement of more than 1 percentage point compared with the first half of the year. 
  • Target paid dividends of $330 million in third quarter 2014, an increase of 21.4 percent from $271 million last year.

By the close of the market yesterday, the release of these results caused Target stock to jump $4.99 for a total of $72.50, a 7.39% increase.

Houweling's Tomatoes Wins Ventura County Resource Conservation District’s “Excellence in Agricultural Stewardship and Sustainability Award"



CAMARILLO, CA – Houweling’s Tomatoes' CEO Casey Houweling was honored by the Ventura County Resource Conservation District (VCRCD) with the “Excellence in Agricultural Stewardship and Sustainability Award.” Casey's daughter, Monica Houweling, attended the 5th Annual VCRCD awards luncheon in Ventura, CA to accept the award on behalf of the company.

“It is an honor to be recognized amongst such a prestigious group of farmers and peers in Ventura County who are committed to investing in our planet and using their resources as efficiently as possible,” Casey shared. “I believe that working together in the agriculture community, we can continue to innovate and create solutions that are economically feasible but that support our ability to farm with fewer resources.”

One of Houweling’s most exciting innovations has been a 13.2 Megawatt cogeneration installation for its 125 acre farm in Camarillo, CA. This installation, the first of its kind in the United States, according to a press release, generates power on-site, supplies excess electricity to the grid, while capturing traditionally wasted heat and CO2. Instead, these resources are used to grow tomatoes within the greenhouse. The end result is carbon neutral energy and reduced fossil fuel use.

Houweling's also utilizes key greenhouse growing techniques to reduce its water consumption. With these methods, the grower uses approximately 1/6th of the water on less than 3% of the land necessary to farm a comparable yield with open field grown tomatoes, protecting the soil and watertable while conserving land usage.

In addition to the Excellence in Agricultural Stewardship and Sustainability Award, Houweling's has also been honored with the the 2014 Cool Planet Award (Agricultural Sector) and California Energy Solutions Center (ESC) Partnership Award for Innovative Energy Solutions during the ESC Technology and Market Assessment Forum.

Houweling's is looking forward to beginning harvest operations on its new 28 acre farm in Mona, UT. This farm will be completely heated by waste energy captured from the stack of an adjacent power plant.
