Stop & Shop Named Official Grocery Store of the New York Mets; Roger Wheeler, Samantha Severin, and Brenden Mallette Comment

QUEENS, NY - Stop & Shop is proud to announce it is now the Official Grocery Store of the New York Mets, joining forces with the team to fight food insecurity across New York City and Long Island. The partnership will focus on Stop & Shop’s School Food Pantry Program, which supports more than 260 schools across the company’s five-state footprint with in-school pantries that ensure kids in need have consistent access to healthy food. In New York City, Stop & Shop has donated over $2 million to date to support in-school food pantries at nearly 50 schools, including 15 right in the Mets’ backyard in Queens where food insecurity impacts many borough residents:

  • 25% of families in Queens lack reliable access to nutritious food.
  • More than 325,000 Queens residents are dealing with food insecurity.
  • 20% of children in Queens are food insecure.
  • Food pantries and soup kitchens in Queens have reported not having enough food to meet current demand.

The Federal Government’s proposed cuts to SNAP spending could impact 1.8 million New Yorkers, including 560,000 children.

As part of the partnership, the Mets Citi Field Food Truck will make deliveries of hot meals and fresh produce, donated by Stop & Shop, to Stop & Shop’s school food pantries across Queens and Long Island. These efforts are part of a shared commitment to ensuring local families have access to nutritious food and vital resources.

Roger Wheeler, President, Stop & Shop

“We’re honored to team up with the New York Mets to take on food insecurity, starting right in Queens,” said Roger Wheeler, President of Stop & Shop, in a recent press release. “With team’s deep roots in the community and our shared commitment to ‘Feeding It Forward’ and nourishing families, we believe this partnership will make a meaningful difference where it’s needed most.”

The Mets and Stop & Shop made the partnership announcement at P.S. 045, The Clarence Witherspoon Elementary School in South Ozone Park, Queens, where Stop & Shop presented a commercial refrigerator and a $20,000 donation to support the school’s food pantry, which serves all 473 enrolled students, including 254 children living in temporary housing. This donation brings Stop & Shop’s total contributions to the school to $80,000, including prior support in food, supplies, and gift cards.

Stop & Shop is proud to announce it is now the Official Grocery Store of the New York Mets, joining forces with the team to fight food insecurity across New York City and Long Island

“We are so grateful to Stop & Shop for their unwavering support of our school food pantry and to the New York Mets for their generous distribution of fresh produce and meaningful engagement with our students,” said Samantha Severin, Principal, P.S. 45Q The Clarence E. Witherspoon Elementary School. “At P.S. 45Q, many of our families courageously navigate the complexities of poverty—grappling with food insecurity, housing instability, and the daily challenges that accompany limited access to essential resources. For the past five years, the Stop & Shop food pantry has not only addressed an urgent physical need—it has provided a consistent, stabilizing force in our students’ lives, helping to establish a sense of safety, belonging, and dignity within the school community. Partnerships like these serve as a reminder that when institutions come together with purpose, we can mitigate the long-term effects of poverty and create environments where all children have the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed.”

The event featured appearances by Mets alumni, outfielder Endy Chávez, along with team mascots Mr. and Mrs. Met, who engaged with students during a celebration that brought together baseball, community, and nourishment. The Stop & Shop Food Truck distributed popsicles to students, while the Mets Citi Field Food Truck delivered fresh produce for 100 local families, reinforcing the shared mission of combatting food insecurity and supporting communities through accessible nutrition.

Brenden Mallette, Senior Vice President of Partnerships, New York Mets

“We are excited to launch our partnership with Stop & Shop at P.S. 045 here in Queens,” says Brenden Mallette, the Mets Senior Vice President of Partnerships. “We look forward to supporting these impactful events throughout the year and bolstering communities throughout New York City and Long Island together.”

USDA Restricts PACA Violators in Michigan, Texas, and Nebraska from Operating in the Produce Industry

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has imposed sanctions on three produce businesses for failing to meet contractual obligations to the sellers of produce they purchased and for failing to pay reparation awards issued under the Perishable Agricultural Commodities Act (PACA). These sanctions include suspending the businesses’ PACA licenses and barring the principal operators of the businesses from engaging in PACA-licensed business or other activities without USDA approval.

The following businesses and individuals are currently restricted from operating in the produce industry:

  • Banana Bros Produce LLC, operating out of Holly, Mich., for failing to pay a $27,334 award in favor of a Mich. seller. As of the issuance date of the reparation order, Chelsey C. Gelardi was listed as the manager/member of the business.
  • J & G Soto Produce LLC, operating out of McAllen, Texas, for failing to pay a $3,277 award in favor of a Fla. seller. As of the issuance date of the reparation order, Guadalupe Soto Benitez was listed as the manager/member of the business.
  • Munoz Fresh Produce LLC, operating out of Omaha, Neb., for failing to pay a $91,810 award in favor of a Wash. seller. As of the issuance date of the reparation order, Marlene Santos and Deleney R. Santos were listed as members of the business.

PACA provides an administrative forum to handle disputes involving produce transactions; this may result in USDA’s issuance of a reparation order that requires damages to be paid by those not meeting their contractual obligations in buying and selling fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables. USDA is required to suspend the license or impose sanctions on an unlicensed business that fails to pay PACA reparations awarded against it as well as impose restrictions against those principals determined to be responsibly connected to the business when the order is issued. Those individuals, including sole proprietors, partners, members, managers, officers, directors or major stockholders, may not be employed by or affiliated with any PACA licensee without USDA approval.

By issuing these penalties, USDA continues to enforce the prompt and full payment for produce while protecting the rights of sellers and buyers in the marketplace.

Wegmans Plans Major Expansion with New Openings in 2025 and Beyond

UNITED STATES - Wegmans is planning ambitious growth as it answers consumer calls for greater access to its stores, according to MSN. After successful openings earlier this year in Long Island and Lake Grove, New York—where eager shoppers lined up in droves—the retailer is set to launch locations in Maryland on June 25 and break into Connecticut for the first time on July 23.

But the momentum doesn’t stop there. The grocer has confirmed plans to plant roots in North Carolina and, after decades of requests, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 2026.

Wegmans is planning ambitious growth as it answers consumer calls for greater access to its stores

The company’s expansion comes as it modernizes its operations with technology upgrades, including a redesigned app and website that promise a seamless blend of in-store and online shopping. Grand openings continue to draw large crowds, thanks to the chain’s reputation for unique offerings. With each new store, thousands of employees are hired, and shoppers gain fresh options for their weekly hauls.

As the retailer sets its sights on new regions, it also signals a broader commitment to innovation and customer satisfaction in today’s competitive grocery landscape.

Dole Honors National Produce Recycling Program with "Spirit of 'Ohana" Award in Honor of International Pineapple Day; William Goldfield and Evan Ehlers Comment

CHARLOTTE, NC - Dole Food Company has announced the first recipient of its “Spirit of ‘Ohana” honor, given to groups and individuals who best demonstrate the hospitality and community-service themes of the Hawaiian concept of extended family.

As an encouragement to others to acknowledge those practicing the spirit of ‘Ohana in their families, neighborhoods, and communities, Dole has recognized Evan Ehlers, the founder & CEO of Sharing Excess, a national nonprofit committed to redistributing surplus food to communities in need.

Dole Food Company has announced the first recipient of its “Spirit of ‘Ohana” honor, given to groups and individuals who best demonstrate the hospitality and community-service themes of the Hawaiian concept of extended family

The recognition is part of the produce leader’s “Spirit of Ohana” initiative offering themed recipes, digital downloads, family activities and in-store merchandising inspired by Disney’s Stitch and the earthly themes of hospitality associated with pineapples and other tropical fruit. Spirit of ‘Ohana honorees receive acknowledgement on Dole.com and a one-year supply of succulent DOLE® Tropical Gold® Pineapples in honor of June 26 as International Stitch Day and June 27 as International Pineapple Day.

Dole first began commercially growing and sharing pineapple with the world in 1901, and no brand is more iconically associated with innovating and showcasing this unique tropical fruit.

Starting today, Dole and Disney fans have the chance to honor those demonstrating an extended definition of family with their own Spirit of ‘Ohana award. Participants can download and print-out a My Ohana Certificate from Dole’s “Spirit of ‘Ohana” website and then personalize and present it to the everyday hero in their lives.

As an encouragement to others to acknowledge those practicing the spirit of ‘Ohana in their families, neighborhoods, and communities, Dole has recognized Evan Ehlers, the founder & CEO of Sharing Excess, a national nonprofit committed to redistributing surplus food to communities in need

Ehlers got the idea for Sharing Excess in 2016 when, as a student at Drexel University, he had 50 leftover meal swipes and decided to use them to buy meals for those in need across Philadelphia. He founded the organization with a mission to rescue surplus and unsold food from wholesalers, distributors, and retailers, and deliver it to communities experiencing food insecurity.

Since then, Sharing Excess has distributed 135 million pounds of food, which equates to 110 million meals, and has fed 10 million people across 36 U.S. states. Ehlers has built a team of 55 full-time staff and 2,000 volunteers based in New York City, Philadelphia, Detroit and Chicago, and has plans to expand to every major U.S port city and agricultural hub to close the 9.1 billion meal gap in America.

William Goldfield, Director of Communications, Dole Food Company

“By creating this nationwide model for surplus food rescue and distribution, Evan is the epitome of the idea of the extended ‘Ohana as not letting anyone get left behind,” said William Goldfield, director of communications for Dole Food Company, in a recent press release. “What’s even more remarkable is that he recruited Dole as one of the earliest Sharing Excess partners at one of our inbound ports of entry, the Port of Wilmington, and has since helped us rescue 800,000 pounds of fresh produce and redistribute it to the hungry in Delaware, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.”

Evan Ehlers, Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Sharing Excess

“At Sharing Excess, we start with the belief that food is the basic unit of life and something that every person deserves,” said Ehlers. “We know there’s more than enough resources for everyone to prosper; the problem isn’t supply, it’s access. That’s why we approach our work as if every person we serve is part of our extended family, and we won’t stop until all available resources, especially food, are shared in a way that allows everyone to live a healthy, dignified life.”

Said Ehlers: “To us, the spirit of ‘Ohana means showing up for one another and building systems rooted in shared responsibility and care. That’s because when one person in the family goes hungry, we all do.”

Dole’s “Spirit of ‘Ohana” continues through mid-September.  In addition to the recipes and digital downloads, there are posts on Dole’s Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest pages, and millions of commemorative DOLE® Tropical Gold Pineapple hangtags and DOLE® Banana stickers emblazoned with Disney’s Stitch in supermarkets throughout the U.S. and Canada.

Stemilt Leads the Way in Rainier Cherry Season with One-of-a-Kind Availability and Premium Quality; Brianna Shales Comments

WENATCHEE, WA - Retailers looking to make the most of Rainier cherry season can look no further than Stemilt. With decades of strategic planting across high-elevation orchards and later-growing regions, Stemilt offers the longest availability of Rainier cherries, ready to position retail partners for success from mid-June through early August.

Brianna Shales, Marketing Director, Stemilt

“No matter what happens with the crop, we have the best chance of having availability for retailers,” said Stemilt’s Marketing Director, Brianna Shales. “We have this uniquely extended cherry program because of our high and low elevation planting sites. The late-season orchards in Washington state mean Rainiers are not only available longer, but in strong volumes when other suppliers have wrapped up. The peak of our Rainier crop is happening now, setting the stage for standout Fourth of July promotions and National Rainier Cherry Day on July 11.”

In June 2024, Stemilt and Category Partners conducted an online survey of 2,001 U.S. consumers who confirmed they purchased cherries during the summer season. The goal of the study was to learn consumer perceptions, preferences, and behaviors regarding cherry purchases.

“Approximately 26% of survey respondents buy Rainier cherries, and 13% state these are their favorite type of cherry,” said Shales. "In the West region, only 9% of cherry category volume is Rainier, but 21% of consumers said it’s their favorite. In the Midwest, Rainier is only 6% of the cherry category, but 11% of consumers said it was their favorite. Demand for Rainier cherries is strong, and retailers should look to carry them consistently and fill this gap when supplies are available to do so.”

With decades of strategic planting across high-elevation orchards and later-growing regions, Stemilt offers the longest availability of Rainier cherries, ready to position retail partners for success from mid-June through early August

To ensure each pack of Stemilt World Famous Rainier cherries satisfies with the sweet flavor and texture they’re known for, Stemilt uses a dedicated Rainier cherry packing line that runs slower to prioritize gentle handling. Additionally, growing techniques like wind screens and bird control are critical to delivering the light colored, sweet, and juicy cherries consumers seek during their short window of availability.

“With Stemilt, retailers don’t just get great cherries, they get a partner with a plan,” added Shales. “We’re committed to helping our customers maximize this seasonal moment with the best Rainier cherries from tree to shelf. Retailers can also lean into storytelling and special promotions, such as limited-time social content and store events around National Rainier Cherry Day, to drive awareness and traffic.”

Stemilt offers Rainier cherries in multiple pack styles, including bags, 1 lb. clamshells, and top seal packaging, giving retailers the flexibility to meet shopper preferences while clearly distinguishing Rainiers from dark-sweet varieties. Their golden hue and naturally sweet flavor make them ideal for impulse purchases, especially when highlighted through eye-catching displays and digital marketing efforts.

“Every week, Rainier cherries can be sold for a premium price,” said Shales. “Rainier cherries appeal to a premium shopper, and we know from consumer research there’s often more demand than supply. That creates an incredible opportunity for retailers to promote and differentiate in-store and online.”

The outlook for the next 6—15 days is that the low-pressure system will move off by next Tuesday, allowing a high-pressure system to return to the area. This will cause temperatures to rise slightly above average. High pressure moves over the area next weekend, which will bring another minor heat wave to the region that will last until the end of the month.
